Painting estimate template

Calculate how much paint is needed. We suggest to calculate paint for every room/space. Measurements could be performed either in meters, or in foots.

Steps suggested for one room/space are listed below. The room walls are painted in one color, the ceiling – in another. 

Ceiling:

1. Calculate Ceiling area: multiply Width of ceiling by Length of ceiling.

2. Calculate how many Liters of Paint are needed for Ceiling: multiply Ceiling area by Number of Coats and divide by Paint Spreading Rate*.

3. Calculate Price of Paint for Ceiling: multiply Liters of Paint for Ceiling by Paint price.

Walls:

1. Calculate Wall surface: multiply Width of all walls added together by Height of the walls. 

2. Calculate Window surface: multiply Height of window by Width of window; repeat the line for each window and add all windows surfaces together. 

3. Calculate Door surface: multiply Height of door by Width of door; repeat the line for each door and add all doors surfaces together. 

4. Calculate Wall surface Not painted: add Window surface (of all windows) to Door surface (of all doors).

5. Calculate Wall surface To Be painted: subtract Wall surface Not painted from Wall surface.

6. Calculate how many Liters of Paint are needed for Walls: multiply Wall surface To Be painted by Number of Coats and divide by Paint Spreading Rate*. 

7. Calculate Price of Paint for Walls: multiply Liters of Paint for Walls by Paint price.

* - Number of Coats could be 1 or 2; Paint Spreading Rate (per liter) – for example 11 square meters/liter.

These steps should be performed for each room/space. Finally you have List of colors with prices and total cost. Add this information as a line item on your estimate.

Estimate materials needed to complete the painting, for example, brushes, rollers, tapes, the paper masking, the primer. The bigger the space to be painted, the more materials are needed.

Depending on work scope, your experience either materials and quantities with prices are listed in this section or they could be taken into account as overhead costs and only total price is added here or in Other charges section.

The time you estimate for the painting work is one of the most important parts of your estimate process.

It heavily relies on your experience and is based on how long a similar work has taken you to complete in the past, and how many painters you are working with to complete the work.

Estimate the amount of labor needed to complete the painting. It may also make a difference when specific skills are needed. In such cases consider whether there are repairs that needs to be done, how easy it is to paint the ceiling and how many coats are needed.  It’s basically the amount of preparation needed and the painting itself that is considered.

Usually it is a good idea to look at what you have to do in each room/space and estimate the time (in hours) it would take for it. Multiply the hours by the labor rate to get the total price.

List any additional changes, overheads, if any.

Estimate the additional costs, for example moving furniture, paint supply and cleaning services after the work is. 

You should also consider the difficulties that are expected to be encountered during work e.g. high structures and ladder-based work.

Cost of consumables such as supplies, cleaning tools and other materials to be used could also be added.

Don’t forget other important things that come up as your business matures, such as: taxes, mileage, distance, and gas, phone and data bill, office space rent, employee benefits.
